Andrew Karlsen

Los Angeles, CA (Ramsey, MN)

NWF Years: 1985

NWF World Champion.

Andrew Karlsen was brought into the NWF in January of 1985 by his friend Matt Kelsey. Originally, Andrew wrestled on his first show (Show #32) wearing a black and red mask going by the name "The Russian Destruction". But that character was short lived, and on the next show, he went without the mask using his new name "Ace".

Karlsen had an immediate impact on the league in a title match against Crossen which result in a rematch on the next show, where Ace would actually win the title from Crossen to become the quickest World Champion in NWF history in wining the World Title in less then 4 weeks from joining the league.

Karlsen would hold the title for most of the year of 1985 defending against the likes of Crusher Crossen, Kid USA Kelsey, Merciless Mike Ackerman, Bunes Beefcake, Pretty Boy Taylor, Jumpin’ Johnson and many others.

Ace’s style in the ring would be best described as a cross between "Nature Boy Ric Flair" and "Tommy Wildfire Rich". Right off the bat when he joined the league, he became a member of "The Peterson Family" with the likes of Brian Peterson and Killer Kampa. But this would only last a few months, when Ace would then go off on his own, although still being a heel all the while.

There were several matches that stand out as being very memorable in Ace’s career. Like the title matches with Crusher Crossen, where Ace took Crossen to the limits in the ring in very entertaining matches. The most controversial match would have to be against Chuck "Roughouse" Roberts from the spring of 1985, where Roberts actually pined Ace and won the NWF World Title, or so it seemed. But by the following show, the title was returned back to Ace with a reason stated to "poor officiating". Also, Ace had some great matches against Pretty Boy Taylor in the summer of 1985.

Ace would eventually lose the belt to Kid USA Kelsey in August of 1985. Ace would then lose his rematch with Kelsey, and would leave the NWF for good. Although promoter Shawn Crossen tried on several occasions to resign Ace back into the NWF for several months after, Ace did not accept. But Ace was a very entertaining wrestler on the show nevertheless.
