Chris Downs

Chicago, IL

NWF Years: 1986 - 1988

Indiana State Championship.

Chris Downs was recruited into the NWF in March of 1986 by his friend Chris Hanson (Sargent Smash). Chris had brought his own character idea to his first show, calling himself The Ice Dragon.

At first, Chris was a babyface and teamed with Chad Ronnebaum (Rock-n-Ronnebaum), as they called themselves The Eliminators. But by the start of the summer, Chris’s style was more related to a heel then a face, as that summer he would become one of the leagues all time best heels.

Chris Downs, like Brian Peterson before him, had a natural ability to be a bad guy. He would be referred to as a "natural heel", in that his personality both in and out of the ring was very difficult to deal with. But the end result of that is some pretty intense chemistry against the likes of Crusher Crossen and Kid USA Kelsey.

By the summer of 1986, Downs teamed up with another newcomer, Dr. Destruction Chad Rancour. Also, Downs had formed a tag team with his brother Jay Downs (The Fly).

In July of 1986, Chris Downs showed up with a belt claiming to be the Indiana State Champion. In August of 1986, for attitude reasons, Chris Downs was suspended from the league.

Chris Downs would return to the NWF at Superstars Spectacular ‘87 on August 23rd, 1987 where he would be in a tag team battle with The Mystery Man as his partner, who had to fill in for a late arriving Dr. Destruction Chad Rancour.

Chris continued on with the NWF all the way into early 1988, where he then retired from the league for good. But Chris’s style was very articulate, and he was one of the leagues most arrogant wrestlers ever.
